Regional Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
What is the R-WASH Programme?
In East Africa, access to safely managed water is a major issue, especially when emergencies such as internal and external influxes of people due to acute and chronic crises such as war, climate change and economic collapse impact communities, occur.
For this reason, UNICEF and UNHCR in cooperation with KfW Development Bank have developed a Regional Water and Sanitation Programme for Refugees, Internally Displaced Persons, and Host Communities in East Africa (R-WASH). The R-WASH is a multi-country, multi-phase initiative providing resilient WASH solutions for refugees, IDPs and host communities in fragile and conflict-affected settings, currently implemented across 7 sites in Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan targeting over 900,000 people. The programme includes investments in sustainable, cost-effective and climate-resilient water and sanitation systems, as well as support for the establishment of efficient, local water utilities ensuring long-term sustainability and promoting social cohesion.
